Smaller games don’t get the recognition that they should and that is a problem nowadays. Everyone is stuck with some AAA title or a multiplayer game and people are paying less and less attention to video games from smaller developers. While big companies are profiting, smaller businesses are in trouble, or are they?
Indie developers have always been here, albeit not all of them have lasted very long. Indie companies are still working hard and making video games, even in 2022. Here are some indie video games that you must play this year.
No Man’s Sky
This is hardly an indie game, albeit most still consider it indie, despite what it managed to do. This game was so bad at launch that it earned abysmally bad reviews. Released in 2016, the game was plagued with bugs and had almost no content. The game is an RPG, but a type of survival sci-fi RPG, set in space. Your world is procedurally generated. Go out there and explore.
Hello Games had one of the best possible redemption arcs in video game history. What was a dead game became better, and better, and better, with every patch release. Today, it is with everyone’s attention if you want to play a game where survival and exploration are the main gameplay elements. Oh, and you have a personal spaceship. Life is good.
Disco Elysium
Some games are indie games, despite being so good that they should be AAA titles. Anyway since this is an open world isometric RPG game, it is far away from a AAA title, at least graphically wise.
Gameplay wise, this game has a phenomenal story and great mechanics, what we want from an RPG. You take the role of a detective, one with a drinking problem. Things don’t really go your way, at first.
Wildermyth
Wildermyth is a good video game, something for all the D&D fans who have never bothered to build their own campaign or have a dungeon master do it for them. Wildermyth does this for you, making quests, dungeons, and sending a bunch of heroes into their probable demise. Play together and pray that the dice roll your way.
Hades
Why not try a hack and slash RPG video game? Zagreus is stuck in Hades and he wants to leave. His father, the eponymous god, doesn’t want to let him. As the game progresses, the hero gets stronger and better at using his plethora of weapons. Supergiant Games created a gem with Hades, and their view of Greek mythology is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise relatively dull world of video games.
Among Us
Among Us is a video game created by developer InnerSloth. There is a bad person on a space station and his or her job is to kill the crew and sabotage the station without getting caught. If a body is found, then the crew can call an EMERGENCY MEETING (insert meme here).
They will debate and discuss who the guilty person is and in the end, throw someone out the airlock. You can eject the wrong person, leaving the crew and station in danger. The game ends when either the killer or crew are dead.
These are some of the best releases that you can play in 2022, indie games or not, depending on how you look at the developer.
More titles that you could consider are Fall Guys, Loop Hero, Celeste and Night in the Wood. There will likely be more nifty releases this year, so keep your eyes open.
